Course: Healing Emotional Trauma
Imagine this: every time you face trauma is like a rock you stumble upon. Some rocks may be smaller and manageable, others may be large and burdensome. Now, imagine picking up each of those rocks throughout your life and placing them in a backpack. The older you get, the more rocks you have and the more burden you carry. Eventually, these rocks will become tiresome even on the flat surface of an easy day. But when you’re trying to climb - when you’re trying to grow in life - these rocks make it nearly impossible...always pulling you back down.
All of us experience trauma throughout life. Some trauma, like abuse and violence, are large rocks that are easily identified. If you’re lucky, your trauma is an accumulation of small to medium size rocks that don’t add noticeable weight at the time. But therein lies the problem! We’re so good at just picking up the rocks and moving on with our lives. This can be detrimental to your future...
Look - we’re all messed up. That thing your mom said when you were 5, still impacts you today. Those moments that you remember with a cringe right before you fall asleep, those still impact you. The fact that most of us can’t go an hour without pulling out our phones just trying to feel connected...or getting distracted; these are all part of a lifelong pattern of pain. If we do nothing, nothing changes. If you’re feeling like something in life is holding you back, you’re probably in the right place.
It’s not life’s circumstances that are the problem, it’s how we deal with them. You don’t have to trudge through and tough it out. You also don’t need to sit on a couch and cry about your mother for hours on end. You need to be brave enough to look pain in the face. I know that sounds scary but don’t worry, there’s good news. There are powerful techniques that can help you cut through the pain, heal faster, and become whole without decades of therapy.
There’s a way to heal the traumas of the past without dragging through the mud endlessly. If you’re tired of shouldering the burden but don’t have the time and energy to dig into it each week without a foreseeable end, you’re ready for this.
When I saw the pain in my patients, I knew there had to be a way to get them relief faster and easier than the typical process of reliving all that trauma. I went to study with world-renowned Dr. Carl Totton who has helped countless people over the course of his career. He agreed to sit with me for six weeks to demonstrate how to release old traumas, begin the healing journey and rewrite your past in order to build a healthier future. After that I tagged in Dr Reid Robinson and Dr Lin Morel to deliver the most comprehensive course on healing trauma that's ever been created.
Everyone walks around with those rocks on their back, but now imagine removing that 60 lbs bag from your back and think about how fast and agile you will feel. Think about how much faster you can climb and grow when your mind and heart are free from pain. Our expert faculty is going to share a lifetime of wisdom and practical techniques that you can apply in your life right now to start feeling better for good.
Building Protective Factors
As we begin our journey, we want to teach you how to build resilience in an often harsh and negative world. We’ll start by talking about what it’s going to take to resolve trauma at deep levels. We’ll discuss why traditional therapy doesn’t work well for most traumatized people and what we can do to actually heal.
The practices include the “Yes” set, Inner-child spiritual healing and a nightly gratitude journal.
Journaling & the Central Role of Nutrition
Creating and practicing new “self care” habits can shift and nurture positive emotions. You’ll discover and learn multiple journaling exercises that help cleanse and build resilience. Proper nutrition and hydration can dramatically affect our emotional and physical well being.

A new type of self care is introduced called Energy Psychology. This technique is based on a method which links psychology with ancient energy concepts from Chinese medicine. Identifying different acupuncture points and meridians in the body help to heal emotional imbalances.

Creating Internal & External Grounding
On the path of recovery from past traumas, creating a sacred space is crucial. There are many energies in the world and in ourselves that can actually interfere with personal healing. This week, Dr Totton teaches us Native Indigenous Wisdom Methods that will help you achieve high level wellbeing and protection.
The practices include Connecting to the 4 Directions, Sand Painting, Unity Breath Meditation.
Honing Your Skills
This week, Dr. Totton reviews what we’ve learned in this course, how to focus on our new skills and how to integrate them into our daily lives. It is important to remember that healing is not an event, healing is a lifestyle and if we have a lifestyle that is healthy, nourishing, and integrated, then our life tends to reflect those same qualities and characteristics.
The practices include Three Dantiens, The Three Masteries, The Gong.
Finding the Motivation to Heal
Trauma makes us want to run and hide. It makes us suppress feelings and bottle them up. Bringing them up and out for healing can feel painful. Who's got time for that? Who needs to feel that? It's the only way out and the pain and your trauma is held you back your whole life. Let's explore how to engage in this work and hold the motivation to heal and grow. Dr Morel is masterful at this.
With motivation comes energy to heal.
Trauma-Informed Psychiatry
Adverse childhood experiences and developmental trauma lead to a life of trauma if unresolved. In this module Dr Robinson walks us through the three types of trauma, the diagnosing and assessing of PTSD, and what a post-trauma reality can look like for you.
He discusses medications, therapy, and the concept of post-traumatic growth.
Trauma, Emotions & Psychotherapy
An emotion-focused understanding of trauma becomes the basis of much of this work. We delve into the science and neurochemistry of emotions and then explore ways to resolve and heal. Maladaptive emotional processing is a hurdle to overcome as we unpack emotional healing from trauma, shame, and other wounds.
This module then continues into the evidence-based therapies for PTSD like Cognitive Processing Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and EMDR.
Somatic approaches to Healing from Trauma
Trauma and disconnection go hand in hand. In this module Dr Robinson helps us explore embodied healing with mindfulness and trauma-informed yoga therapy techniques.
We then delve into somatic experiencing and accessing resource states. From there, we explore eating disorders and trauma. You need tools and awareness to overcome trauma.
Here they are.
Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy for Trauma & PTSD
We are in the midst of a renaissance in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. Dr Robinson is at the forefront of this research. In this module he'll explore the promise of these modalities along with the important role of ceremony and ritual. Shadow work is also an essential part of the discussion. From here, he sheds light on ketamine and MDMA assisted psychotherapy along with other plant-based medicines.
Introduction to Spiritual Healing
We have to learn to be kind to ourselves and find the smallest wins in everything. Building on gratitude and positivity, we can then grow our blessings and put ourselves on a path of true healing and recovery.
This is the introductory module in Dr Lin Morel's series of lessons and she lays the foundation for the work to come.
Safety is an Inside Job
Protective factors are key in emotional trauma work. We need to feel safe and find our inner strength and friends. We have these capacities within us but the connection is distant or lost for most. Dr Morel will help us layer on protection and find our "safe place" for further exploration and healing of our traumatic events and history.
To do this work, we need to create a safe space for our inner child...we need a trauma-free zone.
Taking Your Life Back
This week we're going to work on several practices that will grant you freedom and joy. From silencing the barking dogs to freeform writing and the helping hands exercise, you're going to be given powerful tools for empowerment and healing.
It can be fun and turned into a game that you continue to improve at...freeing your life up at each turn!
Letting Go of the Past
Our trauma tends to become part of our narrative- binding us to the defense mechanisms we've taken on to feel safe. They helped us survive and are now a part of us...holding us back and binding us to the past.
It's time to let it go with specific practices and cord cutting that'll free you up into a future that's yours to enjoy. We delve into emotions, thinking and behavior changes that will radically transform your ties to past wounds.
Embarking on Your Healing Journey
Dr Reid Robinson now steps in to guide us through the next few modules. The Anatomy of trauma, it's domino effect, and the path to wholeness. We delve into how the body keeps score and what we need to do to resolve the pain we've been holding onto.
A journey to wholeness starts with understanding the task at hand. In this module, we set the table for work to come with Dr Robinson.
New Beginnings
Meeting your wise inner self with open arms. In this module we work to connect with our innate inner sage. We work on awareness, acceptance, and a breath of fresh air in our lives. We've let go of the past and now have space for something new.
Who is this person? Are you excited to meet them? Good...because they've been waiting for you.
Embracing Life with Gratitude
Looking for the good, beautiful and loving nature of all things, we learn to let go of the trauma-tinted lenses and see life filled with beauty. We can now protect ourselves and are free to enjoy life and love without the fear and oppression of the past.
Embrace life with wisdom, resilience and joy and let love guide your every step. Yes...this is possible and probable...once you heal your trauma.

It was a privilege to be part of [the]“Healing Emotional Trauma Course”. Each week he provided new tools that could be used to address personal issues that were the result of an emotional trauma experienced through one’s lifetime. He also reviewed the previous week’s tools to reinforce their effectiveness. The Q&A session was interesting to hear problems that other course members were dealing with and how the techniques could be used to help.
The methods that Dr. Totten presented were very clear and easy to follow. I had practiced EFT previously, but the addition of the 9 Gamut steps increased the healing power significantly. I was also previously familiar with Ho’oponopono, but his training helped expand my understanding. The two prayers he provided were very calming and soothing. I was happy that in the final class, he pulled all the tools and techniques together into a 10 day Gong which helped create a daily practice routine.
The instructions, prayers and invocations he provided to help create a “sacred space” will be helpful for preparing for my Reiki and meditation sessions.
I hope everyone else is able to achieve success in releasing and healing their emotional issues and improving their daily awareness by watching these lessons.
-Ron Evans
When the live webinar on Emotional Trauma was announced, I signed up right away. As someone with a significant history of emotional trauma, I was very hopeful this would be information I could benefit from and knew this would speak to so many of us in the Urban Monk circle.
I was pleased it was divided into a 6 week series that was structured, provided organized written material and useful tools, as well as resources for further pursuit. It was nice to see the "visual", knowing that you also had the written materials to review, not only from the written materials, but from the ability to review the presentation itself.
Some things were a great review of knowledge already gained, but there were many that were completely new to me, such as opening sacred space, fire ceremony, and sand painting. One of the suggestions seemed simple enough, journaling/reviewing 3 gratitudes from my day just before going to sleep. I cannot even tell you how that has improved my ability to get to sleep quickly! It all makes sense of course, but always ending the day on a positive note has been HUGE for me. Sometimes it's the simple things, and sometimes it's new ideas, and sometimes it's reviewing and placing emphasis on things we've learned in the past. Another profound yet simple suggestion was saying "stop" to the mind chatter and I find I do this multiple times a day.
Very grateful for this presentation and I know it will continue to provide direction for me in the future.
-Melanie Olsrud
I am so glad that I enrolled in the Healing Trauma course. The insights and exercises that he gave us were very simple and easy but have had a profound impact on teaching me about my inner child and self love. I think as I have followed these teachings, the trauma in my life seems to slowly be dissolving. One thing I have noticed lately is being more motivated to move forward - I don't feel so stuck in a loop of unresolved emotions.
-Rachel Streit
The Healing Emotional Trauma Course was without a doubt one of the most practical and effective healing courses I’ve done. Dr Totton’s careful and respectful attention to detail and explanation of every aspect in this course left me feeling very confident to be able to easily integrate the practices into my daily life immediately. My sleep is better quality and my vitality has increased on a daily basis. This has been extremely beneficial and empowering both personally and professionally. Learning new ways to respond to daily stress, anxiety and trauma, with these simple, practical and effective tools is truly life changing in ways that bring a new level of freedom.
-Kathleen Donhardt
I think everyone experiences or has trauma in this day and age it's almost impossible not too. I know I did and will - but it's how you deal with it, the little upsets - the major events, the past that is weighing you down - that decides whether you actually enjoy and thrive in your life or just "barely” make it through. Just like anything else there is no one size fits all approach or technique that works - this course - Dr. Totton and Pedram give you so many nuggets of wisdom, so many tools one can't help but find their way - with emphasis on self love and self care I truly believe this course will and can help change your life - like I felt it did mine :) for the better.

In this series, Dr. Totton gently guided me out of the dark place I had been hiding
in for years. His kind demeanor allowed me to open myself up to trust and crack
through the icy, protective layer I had created for myself. Through a series of
simple practices I was able to step back and take the hand of my inner child,
embrace all her hopes and fears, and together we have begun a journey of
healing, restoration, and freedom. Through the daily practices of what I learned
in this program, the effects continue to manifest as I move toward my best life
possible and internal peace.
