Course: Temple Grounds
You’re not alone. In the modern world, we’re all running low on time and energy while the stressors, toxins, and extra weight stacks on. It’s a slippery slope that we all have to deal with and modern medicine has absolutely failed in helping us with this issue. In fact, most people feel less vitality each year and this has nothing to do with “natural” aging. Something is wrong and we can all feel it. When that spark of life is missing, our health, our relationships, our careers, and our moods are all impacted in a negative way.
When I was a young man in the martial arts, I’d go to tournaments with my teacher regularly. He’d point out the legends in the room. One would be walking with a cane. Another limping on a bad leg. The hard hitting martial arts guys were all beat up and injured. Then I’d see a healthy and robust looking person gliding across the room and I’d ask, “Who’s that?” The answer was always “oh she’s a Tai Chi master” or “he’s a Qi Gong guy.” That quickly changed my mind about my path. I wanted to be healthy, happy, and full of life through my training- not beat up and achy all the time.
I became the senior student of a Taoist master and studied Qi Gong diligently for the next couple decades. I learned Tai Chi, yoga, meditation, and spent several months traveling through India, Nepal, and Thailand studying with various masters. I studied with the Dalai Lama, the Karmapa Lama, and several others along my path. The practices I learned from these enlightened men and women are powerful- calming and invigorating at the same time. They boost vitality and lighten one’s spirit.
These practices changed my life and I began teaching them to students and patients locally. In turn, their lives were changed for the better and I could see the positive energy rippling through their lives and those of their families. As I was busy in my healthcare career, it dawned on me that teaching people “how to fish” through these practices was the single most important thing I could do. I began recording them in order to preserve their integrity and then I began teaching them more broadly in my Urban Monk Academy. They all live in a course called “The Temple Grounds” which I consider the inner sanctum of all I teach.
If you’re tired of reading about it or listening to lectures, it’s time to get to work and bring these practices into your life. It’s the most important step you can take towards personal power and independence. It’ll bring you back to life and fuel your dreams and aspirations. No kidding. I can show you the practices but you’ve got to do the work.
Are you ready?
Meditation Practices
The section has several meditation practices from various traditions. There are guided tracks, traditional instruction, and brain wave-embedded tracks as well. There’s a new meditation added each month. These are powerful practices that come from unbroken lineages.
Alignment Practices
These Qi Gong and Tai Chi practices are designed to help align the muscles, joints, and viscera so the body works in harmony. They enable the smooth flow of energy and help move it to the vital organs so they can function better. If you’re sore, beat up, and stiff all the time, this is where you should start. Once you’re feeling better, move to the other practices.
I’m finding a more meaningful purpose to my life. I’m healthier. I’m happier. I have more energy and clarity. The Urban Monk makes it simple enough so anyone can do it. Thank you!

Performance Practices
Hailing from the Shaolin Kung Fu tradition, these practices help boost vitality and virility. They can dramatically improve athletic performance and stamina. These practices are what powered the Shaolin Monks and became the story the Jedi Knights are built on. Once you start doing them, you’ll start to feel more energy coursing through your body and you’ll never look back.
Health Practices
I’ve studied with Qi Gong masters from all over the world and I’ve compiled the best practices into this section for health. You’ve got nothing if you don’t have your health so these practices should become a core part of your daily routine. As my students begin their practice, this section is their mainstay until they’re feeling robust and full of energy. I personally do one of these exercises everyday and it’s what keeps me healthy.
Enhancing Consciousness
The deeper practices come from the temple training. These breathing exercises allow you to wash away your perception of who you are or who you think you need to be so you can discover your true nature. This is really the only game in town and we live in a culture that distracts us into being mental slaves to someone else’s vision of reality. To truly be happy, you need to explore the nature of your own consciousness and ask the deepest questions like “Who am I?” and then keep digging. These practices will help you on that journey.
Additional Resources
There's a growing list of resources I always add as my students have new needs. The Temple Grounds is always evolving with new tools, meditations, and practices I add on a monthly basis. It’s a living, breathing body of work and the member’s area reflects this.
